Poster Design - Romeo & Juliet

Written in the 16th century, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet remains one of the premiere stories of love and loss.  This also makes it an incredible challenge for designers to present the play in new and interesting ways. The following is an original design created as a part of a design study for a fictional performance of the play.
Final Original Poster Design
The deep red of love is layered in a water color style to create deeper red-black of blood.  This is a perfect representation of the love and tragedy that is Romeo & Juliet.  This paint swipe acts as a single focal point to draw audience attention and lead them to read the show details.
Sketches of Three Original Ideas
The above sketches are initial ideas for a original poster designs. I elected to move forward with the center image, which used a paint swipe graphic and extensive white space to draw attention to the poster.
Four Romeo and Juliet Promotional Posters
The four posters above are recreations of designs created by Nigel French and presented in his Lynda.com course Designing a Poster. Clockwise from the top left; Bleeding Heart, Woodcut Rose, Modernist, and Dagger Font choices and illustrations have been modified from the original design to add my personal touch to each design.
